Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Newspaper Reporter Contacts the Vance Campaign. His Questions and My Answers

On September 15, I sent a news release to both the Abilene Reporter-News and the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Newspapers. I received an email from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal on September 17. Following are the questions asked and my answers.

According to ABC radio news, President Obama has decided not to take action on amnesty for illegal aliens (“immigration reformin Left euphemism) until after the 2014 election. Of course, the reason he decided to wait was because some Democrat Senators up for reelection this year are scared silly that they will lose the election if MORE amnesty is implemented before the election. They think the American voter is TOO STUPID to realize there is no difference whether an illegal act is implemented before or after an election. It is still an illegal act that will do great harm to America!

“Hello Mr. Vance,

This is Adam Young with the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. I’m looking over your news release and have a few questions. You write that you will only give email interviews. Why is this? I would like to visit with you on the phone or even in person during one of my visits to Abilene.

Also, what are your stances on issues specific to the 19th Congressional District, such as water security, hydraulic fracturing, supporting Dyess Air Force base, etc.?

How long have you lived in the 19th District/Abilene?

Thank you for your time,

Adam Young

Adam

Good morning. Thank you for getting back to me. I apologize for not responding yesterday. I usually faithful check my e-mail after jogging, if I am able to use Abilene Christian University’s track, or walking its trail, if I can not. Yesterday, I got caught up in my work and didn’t check this site until late last night.

A) “You write that you will only give email interviews. Why is this?”

Unfortunately, this policy is based upon past experiences with news reporters. I ran for the Arizona House of Representatives twice while living in Tucson 1986 and 1988. I was very dissatisfied with the coverage I received in both races. Two examples from the 1988 race will, I hope, demonstrate why I have my current policy.

I had been a high school teacher in Illinois for ten years. Nine of those ten years, I taught at St. Charles High School which at that time was considered one of the best systems in Illinois. After we moved to Tucson in 1980, I was elected to the Marana School Board in 1982 and served from 1983-1986. In 1986, I decided to run for the Arizona House of Representatives instead of seeking a second term on the Board because there were major problems with State law, at the time, in relation to school districts. I believed I would be able to help correct those problems as a member of the General Assembly. While campaigning in 1988, I stressed education as my major issue throughout the campaign. I was endorsed by the Arizona Education Association and had the backing of the local education associations. At that time, only the State Association could officially endorse candidates.

The major Tucson paper ran two major stories about the candidatesone soon after the primary and one before the general election. In the one before the general election, the paper gave the top two issues of the four candidates. (Arizona elects two House members and one Senate member from each general assembly district) My two major issues according to the story were taxes and a second one that I do not even remember. However, it was not education. One of the other four candidates was credited with education being one of her two major issues. During the campaign, she only spoke about education when asked and then she only spoke about higher education. Either the reporter was totally incompetent or specifically lied by omission about the issues.

In the first major story, my education was listed as a B.S. degree even though I have both a B.S. and M.S. degree. I called the reporter about the omission. He said it was his mistake and he would correct it in the second story. I let it ride. The same thing occurred in the second story. This time he claimed that it was edited out.

I decided after the 1988 election that if I ever ran again, I would not be dependent upon what reporters do and do not write. With the internet and the five blogs I write, I do have better control. I will answer any question you ask although the answer may be as short as “no comment.” However, I will also post all questions and answers on at least one of my blogs. These particular questions and answers will be posted on http://christiangunslinger3.blogspot.com and http://votevance.blogspot.com. I realize that you are a different reporter and these are different circumstances. However, I am going to be proactive instead of reactive whenever I can. This is an area where I can be proactive.

I do understand a desire to meet with candidates. Of course, I came to this race late. I will see if I can’t fit some time in somewhat later in the campaign. As I said in my release, this is a two step campaign. First step in 2014. Second step, win or lose in 2014, 2016.

B) “what are your stances on issues specific to the 19th Congressional District, such as water security, hydraulic fracturing, supporting Dyess Air Force base, etc.?”

I am a strict constructionist constitutionalist. The thirteen original States were sovereign when the current Constitution was written and ratified. They surrendered a portion of their sovereignty in specific areas for the benefit of uniting. Texas was a sovereign State before joining the union. Today, there are a multitude of areas where the federal government has unconstitutionally impinged upon State sovereignty. I do not support any such encroachments.

1) Water security: For the most part, this is a question for the State of Texas not the federal government and therefore not of Congress. It is my understanding that the Texas Supreme Court has ruled that water rights are the same as mineral rights the water belongs to the owner of the property. I agree with that decision. Changes, if any, should be done by the State of Texas either through constitutional legislative action or constitutional amendment.

2) Hydraulic fracturing: Again, it is a State issue. From what I know, there has not been any conclusive, authoritative studies demonstrating any major problem with it. Regulations, if any, should be by the State. I am a free enterprise advocate. Fracturing has been a boon to the oil industry and, therefore, to our economy. The federal government and therefore Congress should stay out of that which constitutionally belongs to the States.

3) Supporting Dyess Air Force base: This is a federal issue. The federal government’s primary purpose, although certainly not it’s only purpose, is protecting the United States, its borders and territories, and its people. I therefore am a strong supporter of the military and all its branches. My first book is based upon the Vietnam Conflict and our military involvement in it. Tucson, where I lived for 24 years, also has an air force base. Our current President, in my opinion, is attempting to destroy our military as it has historically been. I do not support wasteful spending, bureaucratic overreach, and crony capitalism but I do demand and support a strong military that is the best in the world.

4) Etc.: You will have to be more specific. No student of mine ever received any credit for “etc.” and I taught college prep classes where the test consisted of four essay questions which basically stated “tell me everything you know about this subject.”

C) “How long have you lived in the 19th District/Abilene?”

I arrived in Abilene on June 2, 2013 moving from Morton, Illinois. I have lived in Abilene since. I could have moved to any place within the United States. I selected Abilene for a number of reasons. However, one of them was not to run for Congress. I was an early supporter of Senator Ted Cruz in his 2012 run for the Senate. I have been impressed with him and his knowledge of and support for the Constitution. If asked today, who do I support for President in 2016? The answer is Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

D) “Thank you for your time.”

You are welcome. Thank you for contacting me. I am available for any and all e-mail interviews. Again, I apologize for the slowness of my reply.
